Motion Capture Workshop in Skellefteå Draws International Interest

Motion capture, Game

The workshop was organised as part of the Intersective Game project, in collaboration with Film i Västerbotten and Luleå University of Technology. Interest spread far beyond Sweden’s borders, with registrations coming in from countries including Poland and the United Kingdom.

– The fact that there is so much interest in coming to Skellefteå to dive deeper into motion capture is clear proof that what we offer is both relevant and unique, says Pernilla Lindmark, project manager for Intersective Game.

World-class expertise on site
The weekend’s instructors were among the very best in the field. Nicklas Hansson, Sweden’s leading motion capture stuntman and actor, has worked on productions such as Game of Thrones, Battlefield and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. John Dower has over 30 years of experience producing film, TV and games, including GTA Online, Formula 1 2023 and 007 Legends. He is also the founder of The Mocap Vaults, the world’s leading training platform for motion capture. They were joined by Skellefteå’s own mocap technician, Erik Okfors, who has extensive experience with the technology.

Motion capture, the technology of digitally capturing movement with millimetre precision in real time, is used in everything from game and film production to VR, performing arts, research and education. The technology opens the door to new forms of artistic expression, as well as innovation with great potential in industry, health and learning.

– The aim of the workshop was to give participants a hands-on opportunity to explore and test how mocap can be used in a production context, which is exactly what we offer. We hope more people will get in touch and want to use the technology in their own projects, says Pernilla Lindmark.

The test bed strengthens innovation capacity in the north
Skellefteå is one of the few places in Sweden offering this type of test bed: a creative, multi-purpose environment where interdisciplinary encounters and collaborations can flourish. By increasing knowledge of how this cutting-edge technology can be used, new opportunities emerge to strengthen innovation capacity and develop both products and services.
