One room. Sixteen cameras. Technology that captures movement down to the millimetre. In Skellefte\u00e5 Science City\u2019s motion capture studio, new ways of creating games, art and film are being explored alongside cross disciplinary research, including the development of new rehabilitation methods.<\/p>\n \n <\/div>\n \n

In the motion capture test bed, often referred to as mocap, movements are recorded with millimetre precision. Projects that would otherwise require weeks of manual animation can be captured in seconds. The technology creates a digital skeleton that can be dressed with animated characters or 3D models. While widely used in large scale global game and film productions, in Skellefte\u00e5 it is made accessible to smaller and entirely different types of actors.<\/p>\n

The test bed is more than a technical resource. It provides game developers, filmmakers, researchers and artists with a space to experiment, create and push boundaries.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur test bed creates unique opportunities for smaller actors to work with technology that is otherwise mainly used in expensive, large scale productions,\u201d says Pernilla Lindmark, Project Manager at Skellefte\u00e5 Science City.<\/p>\n

A hub for unexpected collaborations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A full dance sequence was recorded for an artwork featured during Nobel Week Lights, later projected onto a fa\u00e7ade in Stockholm. In the same studio, chiropractors have researched how different treatments affect mobility. The technology has supported the development of prototypes for hand rehabilitation, and currently experiments are underway to explore how a remote audience can interact with a performing artist in real time. Together, these examples illustrate how the technology enables collaborations that might otherwise never have taken place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe test bed is about more than traditional mocap productions. We want to explore the creative processes of the future and discover entirely new ways of working with motion capture,\u201d says Pernilla Lindmark.<\/p>\n

Keeping the door open<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Skellefte\u00e5 Science City owns the technology and operates the test bed as part of the Intersective Game project, which provides both practical and creative support for those interested in exploring motion capture. The organisation connects actors across industries, offers guidance and works to spread knowledge about what is possible today and what might be possible tomorrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur role is to push boundaries. Not only through the technology itself, but by expanding who has access to it,\u201d says Pernilla Lindmark.<\/p>\n

A small space with wide reach<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The test bed may be relatively modest in size, no larger than a standard classroom. Yet the ideas developed here can grow into something significant. By capturing the human body with extreme precision, new ways emerge to understand, express, learn and even heal. Ideas are born that move freely between research, art and technology, and Skellefte\u00e5 Science City ensures the door remains open to anyone ready to explore something that may not even have a name yet.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n
