\n A network changing the games industry from within<\/span>\n <\/h1>\n

It began as a spontaneous idea over breakfast at a hotel. A few months later, women and non binary professionals from around the world were lining up outside a networking event in Skellefte\u00e5. Female Meetup has become a force for change in the gamees industry, starting in northern Sweden and reaching far beyond.<\/p>\n \n <\/div>\n \n

For a long time, the games industry has been dominated by a narrow group in terms of who is visible, who receives funding and who is given space to lead. For women, non binary individuals and other underrepresented groups, this has meant a significantly more challenging path into the industry. Access to resources, opportunities and equal conditions has not been the same as for their male counterparts. That was something Linda Lundgren and her colleagues at Skellefte\u00e5 Science City wanted to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were sitting at a hotel in Stockholm after an event and realised that we had to take action ourselves. The next time we attend an industry event, we decided to create something of our own for this group,\u201d says Linda Lundgren, Finance Manager at Skellefte\u00e5 Science City.<\/p>\n

That idea became reality during Arctic Game Week 2022 in Skellefte\u00e5, where games industry representatives from around the world had gathered. An invitation was sent to participants belonging to the underrepresented group. There were no speakers and no formal agenda. Just a safe space for conversation and networking. What began as a simple, informal initiative quickly grew beyond expectations. Sixty five people registered, and some even had to be turned away at the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was when we realised the need was far greater than we had imagined and that this kind of forum is truly necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

A network growing organically<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since then, Female Meetup has been organised in Lule\u00e5, Ume\u00e5, Boden and during Gamescom in Cologne. Sometimes featuring panel discussions, always centred around networking and connection. The purpose remains both simple and essential: to create opportunities for inspiration, community and meaningful new contacts.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, it was about creating a safe space for women and underrepresented groups in the games industry, where they can network and support one another,\u201d says Linda Lundgren.<\/p>\n

Human connection is at the heart of it. Participants share experiences, discover collaborations and identify new opportunities. Many describe it as the first time they have not felt like the exception in the room.<\/p>\n

More than a project milestone<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Female Meetup is run as an initiative by Skellefte\u00e5 Science City and Arctic Game, the game hub that has grown from five to more than seventy companies in northern Sweden since its launch in 2015. The hub provides support in business development, incubation and inclusion efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cDiversity is not a box to tick for us. It is a natural and essential part of how we build the future of the games industry,\u201d says Linda Lundgren.<\/p>\n

A platform powered by community<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Female Meetup would not exist without the strong community that brings energy and commitment to each event. At the same time, it would not have gained momentum without the platform behind it. Skellefte\u00e5 Science City, which runs Arctic Game, has provided what was needed to turn an idea into reality: time, structure, project funding and trust.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe facilitate and connect people, but the content is created by the passionate individuals who care deeply about these issues,\u201d says Linda Lundgren.<\/p>\n

That engagement is the core of the initiative. Many of those involved contribute on a voluntary basis because they know it matters. A safe space. New connections.
